One of the compounds that has shown increasing demand for incorporation into food due to their significant health benefits are omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidant compounds such as lutein, which are naturally present in eggs; however, their content can be improved. Traditionally, fish oil has been used as a source of omega-3 enrichment, and marigold meal for lutein; however, their production presents significant limitations due to its availability to meet current demand. A promising source of these compounds is microalgae, which produce a large amount of compounds of high nutritional value, including omega-3 and lutein, and their production presents significant advantages compared to traditional sources. The research group at the Bioinnovation Center of the University of Antofagasta has conducted previous research with a native strain, Muriellopsis sp., rich in lutein, and Nannochloropsis gaditana, rich in omega-3, which was incorporated into the diet of salmon, showing promising results. Based on the background presented, the objective of this project focuses on obtaining a mix of microalgae with a high lutein and omega-3 content to enrich and formulate a poultry feed pellet rich in these compounds. To this end, different pellet formulations will be designed and applied to laying hens, and various egg quality parameters will be analyzed.
